    This Passat is the car Volkswagen hopes will take the country by storm. Well, more accurately, it's the base car although not the base trim level being built at the company's new bazillion-dollar mega-plant in Tennessee. And VW is pinning its hopes on the Passat not only to make the plant successful but also to help the company grow its sales in North America. And as I said, this is the base model, with the entry-level powerplant. If there is anything to complain about in this car, which overall is a solid piece, it is the old 2.

    The other engine choices, a 3. But they are pricier, too. The car was designed in Germany for North America. The seats are a bit wider, and there's a little more interior space.

    A Big Gulp cup will fit in the center-console cupholder. We're not sure how many of those they will sell, but this car, with the six-speed auto, has a decent sound system and leather seats. I like the car a lot. Well, not this particular car, because of the engine, but the Passat in general. Filled with passengers and gear, the car becomes even more sluggish. It's the right size, it handles well for a front-driver, and the interior, even though it has a few more hard-plastic bits than what you would find in an Audi, is still well designed, looks good and functions well.

    Put the turbodiesel into this, or even the six-cylinder, and add the Fender up-level audio, and you've got a terrific daily driver. I've spent two days now thinking about what to write about this Volkswagen Passat SE, and therein may lie a clue. It inspires no mellifluous prose, but this new, bigger, blander Passat is a really good midsize sedan. Consider what the average sedan buyer looks for in a car: The Passat gets high marks for each.

    Inside, the Passat SE we tested has extraordinary rear legroom and a simple, open, airy cabin with decent materials. They're not what you'd expect in an Audi, but they're perfectly on par with the rest of the class.

    The trunk is huge, and all of the controls are laid out on the dash in logical fashion with no mysterious symbols. The five-cylinder powerplant is lackluster for sure, but so are most base four-cylinders with automatics from the competition. I actually like the five-pot's odd exhaust note Subaru-esque is the only way I can describe it , and I found its torque characteristics at around 1, to 3, rpm to be really well suited for the Tiptronic gearbox during stop-and-go freeway driving--what many Passat owners will likely spend a fair bit of their time doing.

    Ride and handling were outstanding, with the Passat delivering a perfectly unremarkable freeway experience. It was well damped, smooth and quiet, with a linear brake-pedal feel.

    The steering was a little overboosted for a VW, but it felt in character with the size of the car. My overall impression was that this is a well-thought-out, well-executed midsize competitor. If VW can get its quality reputation out of the toilet and get customers to consider the brand, the Passat may deliver a breakout hit. Sure, it's the old five-pot 2. Even with all of that, the car is amazingly well equipped, with vented and heated leatherette seats, a premium audio system with a big touch screen, redundant steering-wheel controls and automatic climate control, along with nice satin trim surfaces and soft-touch materials lining every little cubby, even the little pocket on the back of the rear center console and the storage bin inside the rear pull-down armrest.

    That kind of attention to detail is too often lacking, generally in the interest of saving a few pennies per unit. Not so with this Passat. I like the interior combination of satin finishes, cream-colored plastics and seats and black dashboard, and the interior room is huge. Even with the front seat moved all the way to the back of its travel, there's still plenty of back-seat floor and knee room. In general, the car seems spacious inside. On the other hand, while I find the front-end styling bold and intriguing, the rest of the exterior seems to fade into vagueness.
